Sketching the Horse in Clay

Sketching the Horse in Clay

Virtual Class

Four Park Series: February 10, 17, 24 and March 3 (consecutive Thursdays)

7:00PM - 9:00PM (Eastern Time Zone)

$80 for entire series

Limited to 9 participants- first come, first served

In this class we will sculpt a horse using, referencing proportional cannons, master copies, photo-references, and structural anatomy for accuracy and naturalism. Students will learn sculpting techniques informed by antique, Renaissance, and 19th century practices, as well as contemporary ceramic sculpture techniques. Our approach is based around close observation to connect information congruently from our variety of references to create a compelling and unique sculpt. We will continue to emphasize anatomical structure and form relationships throughout our study, learning how to read dimensional information from two dimensional references. We will cover basic “block-in” technique, learning how to accurately establish the large relationships of the horse, before moving on to modeling and finishing techniques for clay. The class will include sculpting demonstration, constructive critiques, and lecture.

No experience is necessary, teaching will be tailored to individuals. We will be using a ceramic slab-building technique to construct the horses, so students will only need simple armature for the legs of the horse. The sculptures will be able to be fired in a kiln after the class is finished. We will be working at a 10”-12” tall scale. The class will be held via Zoom, and participants will need a smartphone, tablet, or computer with camera to participate. *Materials are not included but instructor will send list of recommended supplies.
